SEPTEMBER IS PAIN AWARENESS MONTH Local Hypnotist to speak on Hypnosis and Pain Control
(Silver Spring, MD) – September is National Pain Awareness Month. In Rockville this Friday, September 11, Secretary of State John McDonough will present Governor Martin O’Malley’s declaration of Pain Awareness Month for Maryland, at an open house at the Pain Connection Chronic Pain Outreach Center, 12320 Parklawn Drive.
The open house is being held to raise awareness about pain, highlight the issues surrounding pain management, and address the lack of access to pain care. According to the American Pain Foundation, pain impacts an estimated 76.5 million Americans. A hallmark of many chronic conditions, pain affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined according to the National Centers for Health Statistics.
According to Albert Ray, MD, National Pain Foundation Chair and past president of the American Academy of Pain Medicine, "Chronic pain is a serious medical condition that should be treated.… A multidisciplinary approach to pain treatment and management can help people with pain regain greater control of their daily lives. Pain can be managed in a variety of ways, including opioid and non-opioid medications, neuromodulation that employs electrical stimulators for the nervous system, and a wide range of non-traditional methods, including acupuncture, physical therapy, massage and behavioral and psychological treatments that alter the way a person's brain processes pain information.”
On Wednesday, September 9, at 7:30 PM, Donald Pelles, a hypnotherapist in Silver Spring, MD, will speak on “Hypnosis and Pain Control at the monthly local chapter meeting of the National Guild of Hypnotists, at 7361 McWhorter Place, Suite 300, Annandale, VA.
“Pain is both real and ‘in your head’,” says Pelles. “There is a signal, that tells you something is wrong – an injury, say. That’s a good thing, especially at first – ‘You broke your leg, better not try to walk!’ But with chronic pain, that signal has long outlived its usefulness, if there ever was any. Suffering, the hurtful perception of pain, occurs in the brain. Through hypnosis and self-hypnosis we can take the suffering out of pain, by teaching the mind to ignore, to forget about that signal, so that the person can lead a more active, more enjoyable, more fulfilling life.”
