Hypnosis for Body Building - Guest Blog

by Harrish Sairaman

Body building involves more than physical actions – it also requires a particular mindset that enables the person to stick to his/her fitness routines. Developing this mindset is something that not everyone does, so not everyone becomes successful at building their muscles.

It is a known fact and validated by many athletes that the performance is a combination of mind and body and at a mind level

Aspiring body builders who realize the importance of mental control often turn to hypnotherapy. The therapy deals with the mind itself. These smart body builders realize that since everything the body does is directed by the mind, in order to work well with the body, one must work well with the mind.

What does hypnosis for body building involve, exactly? A vital component is hypnosis – the state of awareness where the mind is passive yet able to comprehend instructions. When a person’s mind is under hypnosis, he will absorb commands that will enable him to become more successful in body building.

Some of the things that can be programmed to the client’s mind are the following:

·         Decrease resistance towards actions needed for body building

·         Strengthen motivation to pursue goals

·         Enhance the effects of relaxation upon the body and mind

·         Sharpen focus

·         Strengthen self-control and the ability to say no to temptations and distractions

·         Make the client resilient against hardships and setbacks

·         Help with stress management

·         Eliminate beliefs and fears that prevent the client from working as well as he can

·         Relieve stress and pain

·         Improve physical and mental performance

Aside from dealing with psychological issues, hypnosis may also be effective in promoting the growth and repair of the muscles themselves. After all, the mind is powerful enough to create tangible effects via the power of suggestion alone.

To illustrate, there are cases where hypnotized people were able to go through surgical procedures without receiving any anaesthetic. There are also those who did excellent things like break world records or survive grueling challenges because they truly believed that they could do so. Terminally-ill patients who were told they don’t have much time have proven their doctors wrong because they hypnotized their bodies to work better than expected.

Through hypnosis, a person can achieve an optimal state of mind that makes body building easier and more productive. This is called the “flow state” where the person experiences heightened focus, positive moods, and complete control over his mind and body. Hours may pass by like minutes, thus, the body builder will have no problems going through exercises that others struggle with.

Depending on the person’s temperament, hypnosis can work immediately or after a couple of repetitions. What is important is that he chooses hypnotic commands that he sincerely wants to follow. This is because the mind will refuse to do what the person does not agree to.

If the body builder still wants to do some tasks that he does not feel like doing, a hypnotherapist will help him like those tasks. The therapist will find ways for the client to overcome his resistance towards them so that the hypnotic commands will run smoothly.

Of course, successful bodybuilding involves a lot of things other than hypnotizing the mind to create bigger muscles. However, it does increase the person’s ability to do whatever is needed to make body building successful for him. After a couple of sessions with the therapist, the client will also learn how to control his mind independently.

    Sports Enhancement using Hypnosis
Hypnosis for sports enhancementHypnosis has a long history in sports performance enhancement, especially self-hypnosis.
Hypnosis in sports is enjoying a more positive image.
The Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology (AAASP, n, d.), which is the recognized body for the science of applied sport psychology, now lists hypnosis as one of the nine modalities it endorses for enhancing performance in athletes.
Since the 1970′s sport psychologists have been teaching a variety of visualization exercises to athletes to enhance performance.
Many of these visualization exercises, especially mental rehearsal, are performed in a relaxed state and quite often the athletes experience hypnotic trance states by accident or on purpose. Hypnosis does work to help the athlete reach the maximum mental peak attitude the is necessary to have an excel in their sport.

    Hi Damon,
Yes, I am good working with pain - I do two seminars a month at Hope Connections for Cancer in Bethesda and Largo, and much of the content there is working with pain.
I am surprised you commented on this particular article, which doesn't address pain at all, when I have other blogs that do.
If you want to discuss working with pain, comparing notes perhaps, give me a call or send me an email.
